Budding ecologists are taking root at Dianne Feinstein Elementary School in the Sunset. The school yard is abuzz as kids search for worms, tend to planter boxes, or work on a water catchment system. He is a longtime volunteer for Tzu Chi, a global charity founded by a Buddhist nun in Taiwan. Tzu Chi’s San Francisco location is in the Sunset and Howard is one of its leaders. “I wanted to do something more purposeful in my life,” he says.
