Firefighter Profile: Surf Rescue Hero and Mother of Three Defines Essential Work

Meet Ryan Swaner. She is a lieutenant in the fire department specializing in surf rescue. She lives in the Sunset — two blocks from the beach — where she is raising three kids who attend public school. Lt. Swaner was born in San Francisco and she is proud to protect the city she loves.

Lt. Swaner also trains new recruits as the fire department focuses on local hires. The goal is to have more firefighters live in the neighborhoods they serve.
